Course Description
In 2002 Royal Cinque Ports golf club was honoured to receive both 47th place in the 'Golf World Top 100 Courses', and to feature in the 'Top 10 Favourite Courses' in the Independent National Newspaper.
The Deal course is traditionally laid out in a narrow stretch of land extending to Sandwich Bay and the natural links terrain has been subtly used to provide alternative challenges. The bunkers (74 in total) on the course are large but fair and easily seen from the tees and fairways. On two holes, the 1st and 18th there are water ditches which come into play for the approach shots. The pebble beach can present quite a problem, as the beach is an integral part of the course. The rough is covered in coarse marram grass which is especially punitive between May and August. Once the greens have been reached, you will putt on some of the largest, finest and fastest greens in Britain. Originally laid out by Henry Hunter, the course was modified by James Braid for the 1920 Open. After the ravages of the 1939-1945 war, it was restored by Sir Guy Campbell, and Donald Steel now has the task of keeping the links 'up to date'.
